Razia and Her Tailoring Shop

Before Cyclone Sidr hit her region, Razia (Perujpore Upazilla, Patuakhali) had been living a very hard life merely raising BDT 150-200 a day by working in tailoring. When the cyclone hit the area, even this modest source of income was destroyed along with her house and other properties. Desperate, Razia sought help by approaching micro-lending institutions with excessively high interest rates. Almost a year and a half later, her financial difficulties were compounded when Cyclone Aila impacted the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Soon after Cyclone Aila’s hit, Razia heard of the Fael Khair Program for the Rehabilitation of Cyclone Victims. She applied and received BDT 10,000 to reestablish her tailoring business. Today Razia sells BDT 500-600 a day with net profits per month amounting to nearly BDT 6,000, which is more than enough to send her children to school and cater for the needs of her family.
