The Fael Khair Program in Bangladesh
In favor of a place devastated by natural disasters, one donor has made a generous donation of US$ 130 million to relieve Cyclone victims and to protect locals from similar calamities in the future. The program has been called Fael Khair (Arabic words that mean “philanthropist,” in reference to the anonymous philanthropist who has funded the program) and is now being implemented by the Islamic Development Bank. The Fael Khair Program consists of two main components:
- The Fael Khair Project for the Construction of School-cum-Cyclone Shelters (dual-purpose buildings that are to be used as school buildings in normal times and as shelters in case of calamities);
- The Fael Khair Program for Rehabilitation of Cyclone Victims, which aims to restore livelihoods of Cyclone victims (principally by providing them with interest-free microloans).
